However, due to the very limited photometry for individual galaxies, the true nature of these so-called HST-dark galaxies has remained elusive. Here, we present the first sample of such galaxies observed with very deep, high-resolution NIRCam imaging from the Early Release Science programme CEERS. 30 HST-dark sources are selected based on their red colours across 1.6-4.4 {mu}m. Their physical properties are derived from 12-band multiwavelength photometry, including ancillary HST imaging. We find that these galaxies are generally heavily dust-obscured (A_V_ ~2 mag), massive (logM/M_{sun}_) ~10), star-forming sources at z ~ 2-8 with an observed surface density of ~0.8 arcmin^-2^. This suggests that an important fraction of massive galaxies may have been missing from our cosmic census at z &gt; 3 all the way into the Epoch of Reionization. The HST-dark sources lie on the main sequence of galaxies and add an obscured star formation rate density of 3.2^+1.8^_-1.3_ * 10^-3^M_{sun}_/yr/Mpc^3^ at z ~ 7, showing likely presence of dust in the Epoch of Reionization. Our analysis shows the unique power of JWST to reveal this previously missing galaxy population and to provide a more complete census of galaxies at z = 2-8 based on rest-frame optical imaging.</description><source format="bibcode">2023MNRAS.522..449B</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/522/449</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/496/695">J/MNRAS/496/695 : Timing the earliest quenching events (Carnall+, 2020)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/923/215">J/ApJ/923/215 : MORA: ALMA 2mm survey (Casey+, 2021)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/876/135">J/ApJ/876/135 : 33 Optically faint galaxies (Alcalde Pampliega+, 2019)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/806/110">J/ApJ/806/110 : ALESS survey: SMGs in the ECDF-S data (da Cunha+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/788/125">J/ApJ/788/125 : An ALMA survey of ECDFS submillimeter galaxies</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/218/33">J/ApJS/218/33 : Spitzer-CANDELS catalog within 5 deep fields (Ashby+, 2015)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/522/449</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/522/449</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/522/449</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/522/449</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/522/449</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/522/449</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/522/449/tablea1 (HST-dark galaxy and derived properties by BAGPIPES code on HST/JWST/Spitzer/IRAC data)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/522/449/tablea1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/522/449/tablea1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/522/449/tablea1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>214.9984037</ra><dec>53.0046235</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/11425</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/MNRAS/522/449?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/MNRAS/522/449/tablea1</name><description>HST-dark galaxy and derived properties by BAGPIPES code on HST/JWST/Spitzer/IRAC data</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
