In order to test these predictions, it is necessary to identify these systems, which may be difficult if the signatures of accretion become too weak to be detected. The only chance to identify such 'dead' CVs is by exploiting their close binary nature. We have therefore searched the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 area for apparently isolated white dwarfs that undergo eclipses by a dark companion. We found no such eclipses in either the SDSS or Palomar Transient Factory data sets among our sample of 2264 photometrically selected white dwarf candidates within Stripe 82. This null result allows us to set a firm upper limit on the space density, {rho}0, of dead CVs. In order to determine this limit, we have used Monte Carlo simulations to fold our selection criteria through a simple model of the Galactic CV distribution. Assuming a T_WD_=7500K, the resulting 2{sigma} limit on the space density of dead CVs is {rho}0&lt;~2x10^-5^pc^-3^, where TWD is the typical effective temperature of the white dwarf in such systems.</description><source format="bibcode">2018MNRAS.473.3241H</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/473/3241</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/382/515">J/MNRAS/382/515 : SDSS ultracool and halo WD candidates (Vidrih+, 2007)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/473/3241</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/473/3241</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/473/3241</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/473/3241</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/473/3241</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/473/3241</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/473/3241/tableb1 (SDSS Stripe 82 white dwarfs photometry)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/473/3241/tableb1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/473/3241/tableb1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/473/3241/tableb1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>309.16595</ra><dec>-0.66203</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/4437-4438 4441-4442 4453-4454 4457-4458 4501-4502 4505-4506 4517-4518 4521-4522 4693-4694 4697-4698 4709-4710 4713-4714 4757-4758 4761-4762 4773-4774 4777-4778 5786 5797-5798 5801-5802 7509-7510 7516 6/0-2 12288-12290 17405-17407 17661-17663 17725-17727 17741-17743 17745-17747 17756-17758 17761-17763 17772-17774 17776-17778 17805-17807 17809-17811 17820-17822 17825-17827 17836-17838 17840-17842 17856-17858 17981-17983 17997-17999 18001-18003 18012-18014 18017-18019 18028-18030 18032-18034 18059 18061-18063 18065-18067 18076-18078 18081-18083 18092-18094 18096-18098 18112-18114 18176-18178 18685-18687 18749-18751 18765-18767 18769-18771 18780-18782 18785-18787 18796-18798 18800-18802 18829-18831 18833-18835 18844-18846 18849-18851 18860-18862 18864-18866 18880-18882 19005-19007 19021-19023 19025-19027 19036-19038 19041-19043 19052-19054 19056-19058 19085-19087 19089-19091 19100-19102 19105-19107 19116-19118 19120-19122 19136 19138 19200-19202 19456-19458 23095 23101-23103 23139 23142 23148 23150 23181-23183 23186-23187 23196-23198 23201-23203 23212-23214 23216-23218 23232-23234 30029-30031 30033-30035 30044-30046 30053 30068 36861-36863 49149-49151</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/MNRAS/473/3241?format=ascii</footprint></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/MNRAS/473/3241/tableb1</name><description>SDSS Stripe 82 white dwarfs photometry</description><column><name>RAJ2000</name><description>Right Ascension (J2000)</description><unit>deg</unit><ucd>pos.eq.ra;meta.main</ucd></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
