The use of different colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and especially of the notoriously efficient c_y_ index allowed us to detect a double red giant branch in the cluster CMD. After decontamination from fore- and background sources, the two sequences turned out to be equally populated. The two components also show a bimodal radial distribution well corresponding to that predicted by numerical simulations for clusters living in an intermediate dynamical evolutive state and with a population with modified chemical composition that was born more centrally concentrated than the primordial. The analysis of high-resolution spectra quantitatively demonstrates that the two detected sequences correspond to the first (Na-poor) generation and the second (Na-rich) generation, thus confirming the importance of synergy between photometry and spectroscopy.</description><source format="bibcode">2016MNRAS.458.4162M</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/458/4162</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/I/278">I/278 : Catalog of stars in M3 (von Zeipel, 1908)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/290/69">J/A+A/290/69 : M3 photographic photometry (Buonanno+, 1994)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/PAZh/20/693">J/PAZh/20/693 : Identification &amp; coordinates in NGC 5272 (Evstigneeva+ 1994)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/108/1786">J/AJ/108/1786 : M3 blue stragglers and variable stars (Guhathakurta+, 1994)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/320/757">J/A+A/320/757 : M3 stars CCD photometry (Ferraro+ 1997)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/324/915">J/A+A/324/915 : Blue stragglers in M3 (Ferraro+ 1997)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/120/1364">J/AJ/120/1364 : Abundances in M3 and M13 (Cavallo+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/122/3219">J/AJ/122/3219 : M3 and M13 CCD BV photometry (Rey+, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/129/267">J/AJ/129/267 : RR Lyrae variables in NGC 5272 (Cacciari+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/129/303">J/AJ/129/303 : Abundances of stars in M3 and M13 (Cohen+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/129/1596">J/AJ/129/1596 : BVI photometric variability survey of M3 (Hartman+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/372/1657">J/MNRAS/372/1657 : BVI(c) light curves of variables in M3 (Benko+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/139/2300">J/AJ/139/2300 : BVIc light curves of 3 type II Cepheids (Rabidoux+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/419/2173">J/MNRAS/419/2173 : Long-term photometry of M3 RR Lyrae (Jursik+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/566/A58">J/A+A/566/A58 : Radial velocities in M3, M13, and M92 (Kamann+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/150/129">J/AJ/150/129 : Swift UVOT stars survey.
