One of the key goals of BOSS is to measure the signature of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) in the distribution of Ly{alpha} absorption from the spectra of a sample of ~150000 z&gt;2.2 quasars. Along with measuring the angular diameter distance at z~2.5, BOSS will provide the first direct measurement of the expansion rate of the universe at z&gt;2. One of the biggest challenges in achieving this goal is an efficient target selection algorithm for quasars in the redshift range 2.2&lt;z&lt;3.5, where their colors tend to overlap those of the far more numerous stars. During the first year of the BOSS survey, quasar target selection (QTS) methods were developed and tested to meet the requirement of delivering at least 15 quasars/deg^2^ in this redshift range, with a goal of 20 out of 40 targets/deg^2^ allocated to the quasar survey. To achieve these surface densities, the magnitude limit of the quasar targets was set at g&lt;=22.0 or r&lt;=21.85. We have defined a uniformly selected subsample of 20 targets/deg^2^, for which the selection efficiency is just over 50% (~10 z&gt;2.20 quasars/deg^2^). This "CORE" subsample will be fixed for Years Two through Five of the survey. In this paper, we describe the evolution and implementation of the BOSS QTS algorithms during the first two years of BOSS operations (through 2011 July), in support of the science investigations based on these data, and we analyze the spectra obtained during the first year. During this year, 11263 new z&gt;2.20 quasars were spectroscopically confirmed by BOSS, roughly double the number of previously known quasars with z&gt;2.20. Our current algorithms select an average of 15 z&gt;2.20 quasars/deg^2^ from 40 targets/deg^2^ using single-epoch SDSS imaging.</description><source format="bibcode">2012ApJS..199....3R</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJS/199/3</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/306">II/306 : The SDSS Photometric Catalog, Release 8 (Adelman-McCarthy+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/VII/241">VII/241 : The 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (Croom+ 2004)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/525/A37">J/A+A/525/A37 : Variability indexes of QSOs in SDSS Stripe 82 (Meusinger+,</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/392/19">J/MNRAS/392/19 : The 2dF-SDSS QSO survey (Croom+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/131/2766">J/AJ/131/2766 : Quasar luminosity function from SDSS-DR3 (Richards+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/131/2788">J/AJ/131/2788 : Redshifts in the SFQS survey (Jiang+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://www.sdss3.org/surveys/boss.php : BOSS home page</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://www.sdss.org/ : SDSS home page</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/199/3</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/199/3</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/199/3</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/199/3</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/199/3</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/199/3</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJS/199/3/quasars (Quasars discovered in the MMT survey and those that are non-primary in SDSS-DR8 imaging)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/199/3/quasars?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/199/3/quasars?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/199/3/quasars?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>11.502</ra><dec>0.0954722</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/4441 4442 4506 4697 4709 4710 5797 6/17749 17763 17826 17827 17833 17836 17838 18019 18022 18028 18787 18796 18831 18853 18864 23103 23146 23182 23183 23204 23205 23216 23232 36863</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJS/199/3?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJS/199/3/quasars</name><description>Quasars discovered in the MMT survey and those that are non-primary in SDSS-DR8 imaging</description><column><name>SDSS7</name><description>SDSS-DR7 name</description><ucd>meta.id;meta.main</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="19*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
