The high-cadence observations of SN 2022xkq, a photometrically transitional and spectroscopically 91bg-like SN Ia, cover the first days and weeks following explosion, which are critical to distinguishing between explosion scenarios. The early light curve of SN 2022xkq has a red early color and exhibits a flux excess that is more prominent in redder bands; this is the first time such a feature has been seen in a transitional/91bg-like SN Ia. We also present 92 optical and 19 near-infrared (NIR) spectra, beginning 0.4 days after explosion in the optical and 2.6 days after explosion in the NIR. SN 2022xkq exhibits a long-lived CI 1.0693{mu}m feature that persists until 5 days post-maximum. We also detect CII{lambda}6580 in the pre-maximum optical spectra. These lines are evidence for unburnt carbon that is difficult to reconcile with the double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf. No existing explosion model can fully explain the photometric and spectroscopic data set of SN_2022xkq, but the considerable breadth of the observations is ideal for furthering our understanding of the processes that produce faint SNe Ia.</description><source format="bibcode">2024ApJ...960...29P</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/960/29</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/128/16">J/AJ/128/16 : HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog (Koribalski+, 2004)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/659/122">J/ApJ/659/122 : Improved distances to type Ia supernovae (Jha+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/699/L139">J/ApJ/699/L139 : Spectral parameters of SNe Ia (Wang+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/139/120">J/AJ/139/120 : Low-redshift Type-Ia supernovae (Folatelli+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/412/1441">J/MNRAS/412/1441 : SNe luminosity functions (Li+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/143/126">J/AJ/143/126 : Spectroscopy of 462 nearby Type Ia SNe (Blondin+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/745/74">J/ApJ/745/74 : Pre-maximum spectra of type Ia SNe (Folatelli+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/444/3258">J/MNRAS/444/3258 : Velocities and EW of PTF SNe Ia (Maguire+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/438/L101">J/MNRAS/438/L101 : First month on SN 2013ej (Valenti+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/446/3895">J/MNRAS/446/3895 : The rising light curves of Type Ia SNe (Firth+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/578/A9">J/A+A/578/A9 : Optical and NIR spectra of SN iPTF13ebh (Hsiao+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/451/1973">J/MNRAS/451/1973 : Type Ia SNe high-velocity features (Silverman+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/579/A40">J/A+A/579/A40 : PESSTO catalog (Smartt+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/152/50">J/AJ/152/50 : Cosmicflows-3 catalog (CF3) (Tully+, 2016)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/459/3939">J/MNRAS/459/3939 : Type II supernova light curves (Valenti+, 2016)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/869/56">J/ApJ/869/56 : Updated calibration of CSP-I SNe Ia (Burns+, 2018)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/611/A58">J/A+A/611/A58 : SN 2007on and SN 2011iv light curves (Gall+, 2018)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/853/62">J/ApJ/853/62 : Opt. and NIR sp. and LCs of SN2016ija (Tartaglia+, 2018)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/870/L1">J/ApJ/870/L1 : K2 obs. of type Ia SN 2018oh (Dimitriadis+, 2019)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/630/A76">J/A+A/630/A76 : SN2016hnk photometry and spectroscopy (Galbany+, 2019)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/870/13">J/ApJ/870/13 : K2 LC analysis of ASASSN-18bt (Shappee+, 2019)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/486/5785">J/MNRAS/486/5785 : Type Ia supernova (Siebert+, 2019)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/902/48">J/ApJ/902/48 : ZTF early obs. of type Ia supernovae.
