The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) echelle spectra of these objects enable investigations of a broad range of topics, including stellar and interstellar astrophysics. This paper provides a guide to the spectra of the two evolved M stars, the M2 Iab supergiant {alpha}Ori and the M3.4 giant {gamma}Cru, with comparisons to the prototypical K1.5 giant {alpha}Boo. It includes identifications of the significant atomic and molecular emission and absorption features and discusses the character of the photospheric and chromospheric continua and line spectra. The fluorescent processes responsible for a large portion of the emission-line spectrum, the characteristics of the stellar winds, and the available diagnostics for hot and cool plasmas are also summarized. This analysis will facilitate the future study of the spectra, outer atmospheres, and winds, not only of these objects but of numerous other cool, low-gravity stars, for years to come.</description><source format="bibcode">2018ApJ...869..157C</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/869/157</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/III/124">III/124 : Spectrophotometry of 60 stars (Kiehling, 1987)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/III/186">III/186 : Energy distribution in stars at 320-760 nm (Knyazeva+, 1996)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/177/131">J/A+A/177/131 : CaII &amp; MgII excess flux density in cool stars (Rutten, 1987)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AZh/73/762">J/AZh/73/762 : Energy distribution giants &amp; supergiants (Tereshchenko, 1996)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/326/249">J/A+A/326/249 : Chromospheric models of dwarf M stars (Mauas+ 1997)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/430/303">J/A+A/430/303 : MgII-K line fluxes cool active &amp; quiet stars (Cardini+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/439/1137">J/A+A/439/1137 : PHOENIX model chromospheres of M dwarfs (Fuhrmeister+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/469/309">J/A+A/469/309 : Chromospheric activity in late-type stars (Cincunegui+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/135/1117">J/AJ/135/1117 : Spectroscopic study of red giants in M15 (Meszaros+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/514/A97">J/A+A/514/A97 : High-resolution spectra Late-type stars (Lopez-Santiago+2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/414/418">J/MNRAS/414/418 : Chromospheric Mg II h+k flux of evolved stars (Perez+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/471/770">J/MNRAS/471/770 : Parameters &amp; IR excesses of Gaia DR1 stars (McDonald+, 2017)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/616/A108">J/A+A/616/A108 : Cool stars chromospheric activity (Boro Saikia+, 2018)</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://casa.colorado.edu/~ayres/ASTRAL/ : ASTRAL webpage</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://archive.stsci.edu/prepds/astral/ : MAST ASTRAL webpage</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/869/157</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/869/157</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/869/157</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/869/157</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/869/157</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/869/157</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/><waveband>UV</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/869/157/table1</name><description>HST/STIS ASTRAL observations for {alpha}Ori and {gamma}Cru</description><column><name>Exp</name><description>[1862/17751] Exposition time</description><unit>s</unit><ucd>time.duration;obs.exposure</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType">int</dataType></column><column><name>Grating</name><description>Instrument grating (E140M, E230M or E230H)</description><ucd>meta.id;instr</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="5*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
