The light curve of the object peaked at an absolute mag M_g_=-17.2. The maximum bolometric luminosity (from optical and UV) was L_p_~(1.0+/-0.15)x10^43^erg/s, an order of magnitude fainter than any other optical TDE discovered so far. The luminosity in the first 60 days is consistent with an exponential decay, with L{propto}e^-(t-t_0_)/{tau}^, where t_0_=57631.0 (MJD) and {tau}~15 days. The X-ray shows a marginal detection at L_X_=2.4_-1.1_^1.9^x10^39^erg/s (Swift X-ray Telescope). No radio counterpart was detected down to 3{sigma}, providing upper limits for monochromatic radio luminosities of {nu}L_{nu}_&lt;2.3x10^36^erg/s and {nu}L_{nu}_&lt;1.7x10^37^erg/s (Very Large Array, 6.1 and 22GHz). The blackbody temperature, obtained from combined Swift UV and optical photometry, shows a constant value of 19000K. The transient spectrum at peak is characterized by broad HeII and H{alpha} emission lines, with FWHMs of about 14000km/s and 10000km/s, respectively. HeI lines are also detected at {lambda}{lambda}5875 and 6678. The spectrum of the host is dominated by strong Balmer absorption lines, which are consistent with a post-starburst (E+A) galaxy with an age of ~650Myr and solar metallicity. The characteristics of iPTF16fnl make it an outlier on both luminosity and decay timescales, as compared to other optically selected TDEs. The discovery of such a faint optical event suggests a higher rate of tidal disruptions, as low-luminosity events may have gone unnoticed in previous searches.</description><source format="bibcode">2017ApJ...844...46B</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/844/46</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/IX/10">IX/10 : ROSAT All-Sky Bright Source Catalogue (1RXS) (Voges+ 1999)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/312">II/312 : GALEX-DR5 (GR5) sources from AIS and MIS (Bianchi+ 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/313">II/313 : Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) catalog 1.0 (Ofek+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/VIII/65">VIII/65 : 1.4GHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) (Condon+ 1998)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/V/147">V/147 : The SDSS Photometric Catalogue, Release 12 (Alam+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/116/1094">J/AJ/116/1094 : MAPS-PP catalog of galaxies (Cabanela+, 1998)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/122/51">J/ApJS/122/51 : Spectroscopy of 10 rich galaxy clusters (Dressler+ 1999)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/170/33">J/ApJS/170/33 : Optical properties of Markarian galaxies (Petrosian+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/676/944">J/ApJ/676/944 : GALEX &amp; CFHTLS cand. tidal disruption events (Gezari+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/696/870">J/ApJ/696/870 : Catalina Real-time Transient Survey (CRTS) (Drake+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/397/1177">J/MNRAS/397/1177 : Swift-XRT observations of GRBs (Evans+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/793/38">J/ApJ/793/38 : PTF photometric observations (Arcavi+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/593/A68">J/A+A/593/A68 : PTF12os &amp; iPTF13bvn spectra &amp; light curves (Fremling+, 2016)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/844/46</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/844/46</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/844/46</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/844/46</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/844/46</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/844/46</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><spectral>2.381800341673347e-19 1.2058628298368645e-18</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/><waveband>UV</waveband><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/844/46/table3</name><description>Optical and UV photometry of iPTF16fnl in AB magnitude system</description><column><name>e_umag</name><description>[0.07/0.3]?
