Additional pre-discovery data from the Pan STARRS1 survey extends the light curve back to 2011 September 30 (r=9.4AU). The images showed a similar tail morphology due to small micron sized particles throughout 2013. Observations at submillimeter wavelengths using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on 15 nights between 2013 March 9 (r=4.52AU) and June 16 (r=3.35AU) were used to search for CO and HCN rotation lines. No gas was detected, with upper limits for CO ranging between 3.5-4.5x10^27^molecules/s. Combined with published water production rate estimates we have generated ice sublimation models consistent with the photometric light curve. The inbound light curve is likely controlled by sublimation of CO_2_. At these distances water is not a strong contributor to the outgassing. We also infer that there was a long slow outburst of activity beginning in late 2011 peaking in mid-2013 January (r~5AU) at which point the activity decreased again through 2013 June. We suggest that this outburst was driven by CO injecting large water ice grains into the coma. Observations as the comet came out of solar conjunction seem to confirm our models.</description><source format="bibcode">2013ApJ...776L..20M</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/776/L20</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/B/astorb">B/astorb : Orbits of Minor Planets (Bowell+ 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/B/comets">B/comets : Database of the orbital elements of comets (Rocher, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/575/A52">J/A+A/575/A52 : Short-term variability comet C/2012S1 (Santos-Sanz+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/564/L2">J/A+A/564/L2 : CH3OH line param. in comets ISON and Lovejoy (Agundez+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/750/99">J/ApJ/750/99 : The Pan-STARRS1 photometric system (Tonry+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://www.brucegary.net/ISON/ : Comet ISON web page</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://www.aavso.org/apass : APASS: the AAVSO photometric all-sky survey</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/~reipurth/VYSOS : VYSOS variable young stellar</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/776/L20</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/776/L20</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/776/L20</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/776/L20</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/776/L20</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/776/L20</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/776/L20/table2</name><description>CARA and VYSOS observations</description><column><name>e_mag</name><description>[0.02/0.3] Uncertainty in mag</description><unit>mag</unit><ucd>stat.error;phot.mag</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType">float</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
