Recent studies have discovered massive, hundred-parsec-scale filaments that may be connected to the large-scale, Galactic spiral arm structure. Addressing the nature of these giant molecular filaments (GMFs) requires a census of their occurrence and properties. We perform a systematic search of GMFs in the fourth Galactic quadrant and determine their basic physical properties. We perform a systematic search of GMFs in the fourth Galactic quadrant and determine their basic physical properties. Methods. We identify GMFs based on their dust extinction signatures in the near- and mid-infrared and the velocity structure probed by ^13^CO line emission. We use the ^13^CO line emission and ATLASGAL dust emission data to estimate the total and dense gas masses of the GMFs. We combine our sample with an earlier sample from literature and study the Galactic environment of the GMFs.</description><source format="bibcode">2016A&amp;A...590A.131A</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/590/A131</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/416/1764">J/MNRAS/416/1764 : H_2_O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) (Walsh+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/426/1972">J/MNRAS/426/1972 : H_2_O Southern Galactic Plane Survey HOPS II (Purcell+ 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/197/25">J/ApJS/197/25 : MALT90 pilot survey (Foster+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/208/11">J/ApJS/208/11 : Red MSX Source Survey: massive protostars (Lumsden+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/212/1">J/ApJS/212/1 : The WISE catalog of Galactic HII regions (Anderson+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/431/1752">J/MNRAS/431/1752 : ATLASGAL 6.7GHz methanol masers (Urquhart+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/443/1555">J/MNRAS/443/1555 : ATLASGAL massive star forming clumps sample (Urquhart+ 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/570/A65">J/A+A/570/A65 : ATLASGAL massive clumps CO depletion (Giannetti+, 2014)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/590/A131</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/590/A131</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/590/A131</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/590/A131</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/590/A131</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/590/A131</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/A+A/590/A131/tablea2 (Dense gas tracers and star-forming signs associated to our GMFs)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/590/A131/tablea2?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/590/A131/tablea2?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/590/A131/tablea2?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>197.7453</ra><dec>-62.5764</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/28812-28813 28824 41652-41653 41655 41660-41661 41670-41671 41673 41675-41678 41697-41698 41765 41767 41773 41776-41778 41802-41804 41806 42163 42169-42174 42207 42210-42212 42214 42217 42378-42379 42381-42383 42512</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/590/A131?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Radio</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/590/A131/tablea2</name><description>Dense gas tracers and star-forming signs associated to our GMFs</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
