Our objectives are to validate the BT-Settl model atmospheres, update the M dwarf T_eff_-spectral type relation, and find the atmospheric parameters of the stars in our sample. We compare two samples of optical spectra covering the whole M dwarf sequence with the most recent BT-Settl synthetic spectra and use a {chi}^2^ minimization technique to determine Teff. The first sample consists of 97 low-resolution spectra obtained with New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla Observatory. The second sample contains 55 medium-resolution spectra obtained at the Siding Spring Observatory (SSO). The spectral typing is realized by comparison with already classified M dwarfs.</description><source format="bibcode">2013A&amp;A...556A..15R</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/556/A15</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AN/321/277">J/AN/321/277 : Effective temperatures of K-M giants (Strassmeier+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/389/585">J/MNRAS/389/585 : Fundamental parameters of M dwarfs (Casagrande+, 2008)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/556/A15</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/556/A15</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/556/A15</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/556/A15</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/556/A15</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/556/A15</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/A+A/556/A15/stars (Observable and physical quantities of the M stars observed)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/556/A15/stars?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/556/A15/stars?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/556/A15/stars?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>52.33248</ra><dec>-11.6783669</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/22 4250 4867 8208 16420 16422 16500 16758 16955 16966 17300 17870 18268 18761 18856 20896 21195 21590 22570 22581 22657 22719 22738-22739 22825 23047 23144 24684 24713 24816 24824 24886-24887 24995 25009 25021 25034 25084 25146 25300 25304 25363 25623 25669 26538 26587 26690 26699 26731 26757 26786 26916 26961 27110 27201 27392 27462 27602 27734 27894 28978 29158 30505 30833 31229 33199 33226 33234 33269 33425 33571 33630 33713 33737 33746 33884 33898 34219 34301 34701 34708 34776 34908 34910 34920 34959 35113 35282 35327 35355 35414 35451 35453 35657 35659 35845 35892 36061 36167 36224 36235 36260 36268 36406 36679 36732 36822 36971 37257 37332 38322 38755 40250 40313 40373 40388 40435 40463 40801 40858 41252 41540 41591 41811 42216 42899 44254 44352 45175 45389 45444 45523 45834 46031 46210 46256 46324 46336 46373 46419 46504 46673 47318 47337 48128 48462 48602 48926 48958</spatial><spectral>7.952274030004205e-20 1.7798557115773645e-19</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/556/A15?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/556/A15/stars</name><description>Observable and physical quantities of the M stars observed</description><column><name>SimbadName</name><description>Simbad column added by the CDS</description><ucd>meta.id</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="23*">char</dataType></column><column><name>Name</name><description>Name</description><ucd>meta.id;meta.main</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="23*">char</dataType></column><column><name>SpType</name><description>Spectral type</description><ucd>src.spType</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="4*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
