The youthfulness of the region NGC 346/N66 is well documented by studies of the gas and dust emission, and the detection in the optical of a rich sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, and in the mid- and far-IR of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). However, there is a lack of a comprehensive study of this region in the near-IR that will bridge the previous surveys. We perform a photometric analysis on deep, seeing-limited near-IR VLT images of the region NGC 346/N66 and a nearby control field of the SMC in order to locate the centers of active high- and intermediate-mass star formation through the identification of near-IR bright objects as candidate stellar sources under formation. We use archived imaging data obtained with the high-resolution camera ISAAC at VLT of NGC 346/N66 and we construct the near-IR color-magnitude (CMD) and color-color diagrams (C-CD) of all detected sources. We investigate the nature of all stellar populations in the observed CMDs, and we identify all stellar sources that show significant near-IR excess emission in the observed C-CD. We select, thus, the best candidates for being young stellar sources. Results. Based on their near-IR colors we select 263 candidate young stellar sources. This sample comprises a variety of objects such as intermediate-mass PMS and Herbig Ae/Be stars and possibly massive YSOs, providing original near-IR colors for them. The spatial distribution of the selected candidate sources shows that they are located along the dusty filamentary structures of N66 seen in mid- and far-IR dust emission and agrees very well with that of previously detected candidate YSOs and PMS stars.</description><source format="bibcode">2010A&amp;A...515A..56G</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/515/A56</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/PASP/98/1133">J/PASP/98/1133 : The open cluster NGC 346 (Niemela+, 1986)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/98/1305">J/AJ/98/1305 : Stellar content of NGC 346 (Massey+, 1989)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/456/623">J/A+A/456/623 : VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars (Evans+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/166/549">J/ApJS/166/549 : HST/ACS observations of NGC 346 (Gouliermis+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/133/44">J/AJ/133/44 : NGC 346 HST VI photometry (Sabbi+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/669/327">J/ApJ/669/327 : S3MC: YSOs in N66, in SMC (Simon+, 2007)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/515/A56</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/515/A56</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/515/A56</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/515/A56</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/515/A56</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/515/A56</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/A+A/515/A56/table1 (Photometric parameters for 2506 stars in NGC 346/N66 from VLT/ISAAC imaging)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/515/A56/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/515/A56/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/515/A56/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>14.79218</ra><dec>-72.16765</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/33317 33328</spatial><spectral>7.952274030004205e-20 1.7798557115773645e-19</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/515/A56?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/515/A56/table1</name><description>Photometric parameters for 2506 stars in NGC 346/N66 from VLT/ISAAC imaging</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
