Here, we report that the spectral diversity of SNe Ia is tied to their birthplace environments. We found that those with high-velocity ejecta are substantially more concentrated in the inner and brighter regions of their host galaxies than are normal-velocity SNe Ia. Furthermore, the former tend to inhabit larger and more luminous hosts. These results suggest that high-velocity SNe Ia likely originate from relatively younger and more metal-rich progenitors than do normal-velocity SNe Ia and are restricted to galaxies with substantial chemical evolution.</description><source format="bibcode">2013Sci...340..170W</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/other/Sci/340.170</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/689/377">J/ApJ/689/377 : SNe Ia as NIR standard candles from PAIRITEL</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/389/1577">J/MNRAS/389/1577 : UBVRI absolute magnitudes of Type Ia SNe (Takanashi+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/699/L139">J/ApJ/699/L139 : Spectral parameters of SNe Ia (Wang+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/707/1449">J/ApJ/707/1449 : Local hosts of SNe Ia (Neill+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/721/1608">J/ApJ/721/1608 : Absolute UV magnitudes of type Ia SNe (Brown+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/722/566">J/ApJ/722/566 : SDSS-II SN survey host galaxies of SNe Ia (Lampeitl+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/190/418">J/ApJS/190/418 : Light curves for 165 SNe Ia (Ganeshalingam+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/139/519">J/AJ/139/519 : Carnegie supernova project.
