Both are biased towards planets that are relatively close to their parent stars, and studies find that around 17-30% of solar-like stars host a planet. Gravitational microlensing on the other hand, probes planets that are further away from their stars. Recently, a population of planets that are unbound or very far from their stars was discovered by microlensing. These planets are at least as numerous as the stars in the Milky Way. Here we report a statistical analysis of microlensing data (gathered in 2002-07) that reveals the fraction of bound planets 0.5-10AU (Sun-Earth distance) from their stars. We find that of stars host Jupiter-mass planets (0.3-10M_J_, where M_J_=318M_{earth}_ and M_{earth}_ is Earth's mass). Cool Neptunes (10-30M_{earth}_) and super-Earths (5-10M_{earth}_) are even more common: their respective abundances per star are 52^+22^_-29_% and 62^+35^_-37_%. We conclude that stars are orbited by planets as a rule, rather than the exception.</description><source format="bibcode">2012Natur.481..167C</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/other/Nat/481.167</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AcA/50/1">J/AcA/50/1 : OGLE microlensing events in Galactic Bulge (Udalski+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AcA/51/175">J/AcA/51/175 : OGLE-II DIA microlensing events (Wozniak+, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/343/1131">J/MNRAS/343/1131 : 1998-2000 OGLE events microlensing limits (Tsapras+, 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/631/906">J/ApJ/631/906 : MACHO Galactic Bulge microlensing events (Thomas+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/636/240">J/ApJ/636/240 : OGLE II microlensing parameters (Sumi+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/454/185">J/A+A/454/185 : EROS-2 microlensing parameters (Hamadache+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/711/L48">J/ApJ/711/L48 : 2008 OGLE Bulge microlensing alerts (Cohen+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/512/A41">J/A+A/512/A41 : Abundances of microlensed stars in the Bulge (Bensby+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/533/A134">J/A+A/533/A134 : Abundances of microlensed stars in the Bulge (Bensby+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/549/A147">J/A+A/549/A147 : Abundances of microlensed stars in the Bulge (Bensby+, 2013)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/other/Nat/481.167</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/other/Nat/481.167</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/other/Nat/481.167</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/other/Nat/481.167</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/other/Nat/481.167</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/other/Nat/481.167</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/other/Nat/481.167/tables1 (List of events followed by PLANET from 2002-2007)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/other/Nat/481.167/tables1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/other/Nat/481.167/tables1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/other/Nat/481.167/tables1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>267.8173333</ra><dec>-30.2087222</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/7179 7181 7182 7183 7194 7205 7216 7217 6/28707 28709 28710 28711 28715 28723 28746 28780 28782 28783 28804 28817 28819 28873 28876 28880 28883 28905</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/other/Nat/481.167?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/other/Nat/481.167/tables1</name><description>List of events followed by PLANET from 2002-2007</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
