We implemented the reduced magnetic braking (MB) model proposed by Li, Wu &amp; Wickramasinghe into the Binary Stellar Evolution (BSE) code recently calibrated for cataclysmic variable (CV) evolution. We then compared separately our predictions for polars and non-magnetic CVs with a large and homogeneous sample of observed CVs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We found that the predicted orbital period distributions and space densities agree with the observations if period bouncers are excluded. For polars, we also find agreement between predicted and observed mass transfer rates, while the mass transfer rates of non-magnetic CVs with periods &gt;~3h drastically disagree with those derived from observations. Our results provide strong evidence that the reduced MB model for the evolution of highly magnetized accreting WDs can explain the observed properties of polars. The remaining main issues in our understanding of CV evolution are the origin of the large number of highly magnetic WDs, the large scatter of the observed mass transfer rates for non-magnetic systems with periods &gt;~3h, and the absence of period bouncers in observed samples.</description><source format="bibcode">2020MNRAS.491.5717B</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/491/5717</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/I/347">I/347 : Distances to 1.33 billion stars in Gaia DR2 (Bailer-Jones+, 2018)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/V/147">V/147 : The SDSS Photometric Catalogue, Release 12 (Alam+, 2015)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/491/5717</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/491/5717</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/491/5717</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/491/5717</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/491/5717</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/491/5717</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/491/5717/tableb1 (CVs from SDSS with reliable orbital period measurements)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/491/5717/tableb1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/491/5717/tableb1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/491/5717/tableb1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>2.9711458</ra><dec>-6.7941839</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/4120 4123 4129 4144 4173-4174 4195 4296 4399 4453 4479 4515 4530 4607 4622 4650 4723 4740 4747 4757 4761 4844 4860 4905 4964 4988 4999 5005 5062 5115 5129 5191 5210 5345 5457 5485 5558 5570 5584 5596 5727 5756 5833 5864 5918 5929 5932 5963 6036 6052 6076 6086 6131 6237 6242 6244 6386 6456 6528 6546 6570 6588 6598-6599 6621 6637 6643 7168 7194 7199 7211 7233 7248 7306 7320 7371 7390 7514 8267 8269 8296 8359 8474 8552 8559 8630 8688 8693 8977 9165 9267 9301 9333 9467 9489 9618 9738 9747 9765 9792 10126 10232 11072 11112 11168 11230 11319 11324 11333 11351 11456 11838 11931 12288-12289 12408 12627 13335 17360 17515 17600 17767 17818 17983 18027 18061 18071 18303 18520 18604 18844 18859 18862 19173 19385 19937 19943 20034 20168 20212 20296 20436 21879 22010 22360 22485 22716 23050 23275 25506 25934 26157 26287 26379 26586 26588 26995 27004 27314 27343 27386 27419 27455 27482 27545 27612 27671 27956 27975 28082 28104 28127 28194 28396 28501 28561 30041 30044 31145 31309 31331 31357 31642 31684 31689 31699 31715 32408-32409 32432 32436 49100 49120 49123 49129</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/MNRAS/491/5717?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/MNRAS/491/5717/tableb1</name><description>CVs from SDSS with reliable orbital period measurements</description><column><name>SimbadName</name><description>Simbad column added by the CDS</description><ucd>meta.id</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="24*">char</dataType><flag>nullable</flag></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
