We discuss the nature of the MSX sources [mostly asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars], their luminosities, the interstellar extinction, the mass-loss rate distribution and the total mass-loss rate in the bulge. The mid-infrared data of MSX point sources have been combined with the near-infrared (J, H and Ks) data of Two Micron All Sky Survey. The cross-identification was restricted to Ks-band detected sources with Ks&lt;=11mag. However, for those bright MSX D-band sources ([D]&lt;4.0mag), which do not satisfy this criterion, we have set no Ks-band magnitude cut-off. The bolometric magnitudes and the corresponding luminosities of the MSX sources were derived by fitting blackbody curves. The relation between dM/dt and (Ks-[15])0 was used to derive the mass-loss rate of each MSX source in the bulge fields. Except for very few post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae and OH/IR stars, a large fraction of the detected sources at 15 micron (MSX D band) are AGB stars well above the red giant branch tip. A number of them show an excess in ([A]-[D])0 and (Ks-[D])0 colours, characteristic of mass-loss. These colours, especially (Ks-[D])0, enable estimation of the mass-loss rates (dM/dt) of the sources in the bulge fields which range from 10^-7^ to 10^-4^M_{sun}_/yr. Taking into consideration the completeness of the mass-loss rate bins, we find that the contribution to the integrated mass-loss is probably dominated by mass-loss rates larger than 3x10^-7^M_{sun}_/yr and is about 1.96x10^-4^M_{sun}_/yr/deg^2^ in the `intermediate' and `outer' bulge fields of sources with mass-loss rates, dM/dt&gt;3x10^-7^M_{sun}_/yr. The corresponding integrated mass-loss rate per unit stellar mass is 0.48x10^-11^/yr. Apart from this, the various mid- and near-infrared colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams are discussed in the paper to study the nature of the stellar population in the MSX bulge fields.</description><source format="bibcode">2007MNRAS.381.1219O</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/381/1219</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/V/114">V/114 : MSX6C Infrared Point Source Catalog (Egan+ 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/246">II/246 : 2MASS All-Sky Catalog of Point Sources (Cutri+ 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/243">II/243 : The ISOGAL Point Source Catalogue - IGPSC (Omont+ 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/B/denis">B/denis : The DENIS database (DENIS Consortium, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/122/1844">J/AJ/122/1844 : MSX and 2MASS cross-correlation in LMC (Egan+, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/405/531">J/A+A/405/531 : IR spec. of ISOGAL Galactic Bulge sources (Schultheis+, 2003)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/381/1219</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/381/1219</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/381/1219</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/381/1219</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/381/1219</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/381/1219</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/381/1219/table2 (Catalogue of MSX-2MASS sources in the bulge fields with their DENIS &amp; ISOGAL counterparts.)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/381/1219/table2?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/381/1219/table2?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/381/1219/table2?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>260.1362</ra><dec>-28.8375</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>4/1803 5/7182-7183 7194 7204-7205 7209 7211 7216 6/28722-28723 28726-28727 28780 28782 28805 28807 28815 28825 28828-28829 28843 28868 28870 28872-28873 28896 28898 28904 28906 29188-29189 29200-29201 29204-29205 29248</spatial><spectral>6.6794754322138496e-21 1.7003137259100215e-19</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/MNRAS/381/1219?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/MNRAS/381/1219/table1</name><description>The detailed characteristics of the MSX bulge subfields</description><column><name>Field</name><description>MSX bulge subfields</description><ucd>obs.field</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="28*">char</dataType></column><column><name>N2MASS</name><description>Number of 2MASS sources (Ks&lt;=11.0mag)</description><ucd>meta.number</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType">int</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
