Abell 262, 347, 400, 426, 569, 779, 1367 and 1656) to include a complete sample of early-type galaxies within 1.5 Abell radii of the cluster centres. Of the 379 galaxies surveyed, 3 per cent of E, E-S0 galaxies, 6 per cent of S0 galaxies, and 9 per cent of S0/a galaxies were detected in emission. From a comparison of cluster and supercluster field galaxies, we conclude that the frequency of emission-line galaxies (ELGs; W&gt;=20{AA}) is similar for field and cluster early-type galaxies. A similar result has previously been obtained for galaxies of types Sa and later. Together, these results confirm the inference of Biviano et al. (1997A&amp;A...321...84B) that the relative frequency of ELGs in clusters and the field can be entirely accounted for by the different mix of morphological types between the differing environments, and that, for galaxies of a given morphological type, the fraction of ELGs is independent of environment. Detected emission is classified as 'compact' or 'diffuse', identified as circumnuclear starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission and disc emission, respectively. By comparing spectroscopic data for cluster early-type ELGs with data for field galaxies from the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galactic nuclei, we demonstrate that there is modest evidence for an enhancement of compact H II emission relative to AGN emission in the early-type cluster ELGs as compared to the field. For the cluster early-type galaxies, compact H II emission correlates strongly with a disturbed morphology. This suggests that, as for later-type cluster galaxies, this enhanced compact H II emission can readily be explained as an enhancement of circumnuclear starburst emission due to gravitational tidal interactions, most likely caused by subcluster merging and other on-going processes of cluster virialization.</description><source format="bibcode">2005MNRAS.357.1337M</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/357/1337</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/124/2453">J/AJ/124/2453 : Spectroscopy of active gal. in nearby clusters (Miller+, 2002)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/357/1337</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/357/1337</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/357/1337</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/357/1337</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/357/1337</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/357/1337</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/357/1337/table1 (Cluster galaxy survey sample)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/357/1337/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/357/1337/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/357/1337/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>26.1607083</ra><dec>35.8067222</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/357/1337/table2 (Galaxies detected in H{alpha} emission)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/357/1337/table2?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/357/1337/table2?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/357/1337/table2?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>27.3285</ra><dec>34.9648</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/425 601 2594-2595 2600 6/37 48 50-51 56 1675 1677-1679 1688-1690 1699 1704-1705 1707-1710 2172 2175 2257 2260-2262 2346-2347 2351 2383 2403 2409-2410 2412-2414 2416 2418 2432-2434 2436 4985-4990 6945 6947-6948 6950-6952 6955 6961-6964 6968 10371-10372 10375 10384 10393-10396 10398-10399 10404 10413 10417-10420 10424 28125 28127 28149</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/MNRAS/357/1337?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/MNRAS/357/1337/table1</name><description>Cluster galaxy survey sample</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
