In this sample there is a correlation between variability and both quasar luminosity and redshift, at greater than the 99 per cent significance level. Quasars of high luminosity show significantly less variability than those with low luminosity, the rms variation ranging from about 0.25mag at M_B_=-23 to 0.1mag at M_B_=-28. The observed trends can be explained by an intrinsic dependence of quasar variability on luminosity combined with the effects of time dilation, and have implications for quasar samples selected by variability or multicolour techniques. The change in the slope of the n(m) relation at the break can be less pronounced in variability-selected samples. Our results can be used to test models for the origin and reprocessing of the continuum emission in quasars.</description><source format="bibcode">1994MNRAS.268..305H</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/MNRAS/268/305</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/353/77">J/A+A/353/77 : Luminous QSO variability &amp; polarization (Teerikorpi+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/321/123">J/A+A/321/123 : Optical variability of QSOs (Cristiani+ 1997)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/143/357">J/A+AS/143/357 : Tuorla Quasar Monitoring (Katajainen+ 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/260/202">J/MNRAS/260/202 : Quasar luminosity function (Hawkins+, 1993)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/268/305</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/268/305</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/MNRAS/268/305</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/268/305</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/268/305</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/MNRAS/268/305</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/MNRAS/268/305/tablea1 (Positions, redshifts, mean apparent Bj magnitudes and variability index for the SGP sample)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/268/305/tablea1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/268/305/tablea1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/MNRAS/268/305/tablea1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>10.5278008</ra><dec>-28.2537944</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/4160-4161 4163-4164 8937-8939 8942 6/16469 16649 16660 16664-16665 35583 35747 35760 35762-35763 35772 35774</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/MNRAS/268/305?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/MNRAS/268/305/tablea1</name><description>Positions, redshifts, mean apparent Bj magnitudes and variability index for the SGP sample</description><column><name>Note</name><description>Notes (3)</description><ucd>meta.note</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="5*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
