The NEP survey is centered at RA=18:00 (2000) DE=+66:33 and covers a region of 80.7deg^2^ at a moderate Galactic latitude of b=29.8{deg}. Hence, the NEP survey is as deep and covers a comparable solid angle to the ROSAT serendipitous surveys but is also contiguous. We have identified 99.6% of the sources and determined redshifts for the extragalactic objects. In this paper we present the optical identifications of the NEP catalog of X-ray sources including basic X-ray data and properties of the sources. We also describe with some detail the optical identification procedure. The classification of the optical counterparts to the NEP sources is very similar to that of previous surveys, in particular the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). The main constituents of the catalog are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (~49%), either type 1 or type 2 according to the broadness of their permitted emission lines. Stellar counterparts are the second most common identification class (~34%). Clusters and groups of galaxies comprise 14%, and BL Lacertae objects 2%. One non-AGN galaxy and one planetary nebula have also been found. The NEP catalog of X-ray sources is a homogeneous sample of astronomical objects featuring complete optical identification.</description><source format="bibcode">2003ApJS..149...29G</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJS/149/29</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/IX/29">IX/29 : ROSAT All-Sky Survey Faint Source Catalog (Voges+ 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/141/257">J/A+AS/141/257 : Very deep IRAS 60um sources in NEP region (Aussel+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/134/221">J/A+AS/134/221 : Radio-loud ROSAT sources near NEP (Brinkmann+, 1999)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/93/145">J/ApJS/93/145 : Radio survey around North Ecliptic Pole (Kollgaard+, 1994)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/75/67">J/A+AS/75/67 : Survey around the North Ecliptic Pole at 11cm (Loiseau+, 1988)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/162/304">J/ApJS/162/304 : ROSAT NEP X-ray source catalog (Henry+, 2006)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/149/29</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/149/29</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/149/29</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/149/29</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/149/29</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/149/29</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJS/149/29/table3 (ROSAT NEP Source Catalog)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/149/29/table3?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/149/29/table3?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/149/29/table3?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>258.855417</ra><dec>62.659444</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>4/1002 5/2557 2559 2900 2901 2903 2908 2909 2910 3837 3838 3839 4012 4013 4014 6/10205 10206 10207 10221 10223 10225 10226 10227 10232 10234 10235 11589 11591 11608 11610 11611 11644 11645 11646 11728 15326 15327 15343 15345 15347 16010 16011 16014 16060 16061 16098</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJS/149/29?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Radio</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJS/149/29/table3</name><description>ROSAT NEP Source Catalog</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
