The optical/infrared continuum morphology of the host galaxy is asymmetric, with strong color gradients and an enormous biconical emission-line nebula. The morphology of 4C 23.56 is best described by a dusty galaxy illuminated by a beam from an active galactic nucleus that is scattered into our line of sight. We determine the K' band number counts in the field to a limit of K'=22.5mag and find a marginally significant excess of objects with K'=19-21mag, compared to other K' band surveys. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 117 objects in the field are constructed from aperture photometry in five bands (U', NB, V, I, and K'). From the SEDS we distinguish three subsets of objects as possible candidates for z~2.48 companions: emission-line galaxies, very red galaxies, and flat-spectrum star-forming galaxies. The field has nine candidate objects with line emission in a narrow band centered on the redshifted Ly{alpha} line, compared to an expected number of at most three foreground [O II] emitters that could mimic Ly{alpha} alpha sources. We find a high density of faint, very red objects with I-K'&gt;4mag in the field, including two with I-K'&gt;6mag.</description><source format="bibcode">1997ApJS..109..367K</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJS/109/367</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/109/367</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/109/367</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJS/109/367</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/109/367</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/109/367</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJS/109/367</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJS/109/367/table4 (Photometry of 4C 23.56 field sources)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/109/367/table4?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/109/367/table4?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJS/109/367/table4?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>316.8022083</ra><dec>23.5355556</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJS/109/367?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband><waveband>Radio</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJS/109/367/table4</name><description>Photometry of 4C 23.56 field sources</description><column><name>l_Vmag</name><description>Limit flag on Vmag</description><ucd>meta.code.error</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="1*">char</dataType></column><column><name>e_NB</name><description>? rms uncertainty on NB in AB magnitude (2)</description><unit>mag</unit><ucd>stat.error</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType">float</dataType><flag>nullable</flag></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
