It offers a unique opportunity to test whether the CCC hypothesis is supported by the spatial distribution and star formation chronology of young stars. We present the first study of the optically visible pre-main sequence (PMS) population of the region using riH{alpha} imaging and Gaia astrometry. Combined with an analysis of young stellar objects (YSOs) using infrared imaging, we capture the spatial distribution and star formation chronology of the young stellar population. From the analysis, 15 Flat/Class I YSOs, 46 Class II YSOs, and 41 accreting PMS stars are identified (diskless/non-accreting sources are not included in the analysis). The distance based on Gaia parallaxes is ~1250pc, significantly closer than previously reported. The Class II YSOs and PMS stars (~1.5Myr old) are spread toward the edge of the molecular clouds. They are slightly younger than the estimated crossing time of ~2.7Myr and closer to the estimated dynamical age ~0.85Myr. Younger Class I YSOs are more concentrated spatially. There exists a cavity devoid of young stars where the two clouds overlap. This evidence suggests that the current generation of stars formed after the collision of two clouds ~1Myr ago, and this result can be corroborated using future spectroscopic studies.</description><source format="bibcode">2021ApJ...921...81K</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/921/81</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/293">II/293 : GLIMPSE Source Catalog (I + II + 3D) (IPAC 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/341">II/341 : VPHAS+ DR2 survey (Drew+, 2016)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/921/81</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/921/81</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/921/81</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/921/81</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/921/81</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/921/81</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJ/921/81/table1 (Infrared photometry of young stellar objects in the Trifid nebula)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/921/81/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/921/81/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/921/81/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>270.632125</ra><dec>-23.0379722</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJ/921/81/table2 (Optical photometry, Gaia astrometry, and estimated stellar properties of pre-main sequence stars in the Trifid nebula)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/921/81/table2?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/921/81/table2?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/921/81/table2?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>270.59925</ra><dec>-22.9940833</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/28913</spatial><spectral>6.772611666688002e-21 1.7003137259100215e-19</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJ/921/81?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/921/81/table1</name><description>Infrared photometry of young stellar objects in the Trifid nebula</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
