Our main aim is to determine the metallicity distribution of these absorbers. Our sample consists of 224 absorbers selected on the basis of their HI absorption strength. Here we discuss the properties of our survey and the immediate empirical results. We find singly and doubly ionized metal species, and HI typically have similar velocity profiles, implying they probe gas in the same or similar environments. The ionic ratios (e.g., N_CII_/N_CIII_, N_OI_/N_CII_) indicate that the gas in these absorbers is largely ionized, and the ionization conditions are quite comparable across the sampled N_HI_ range. The Doppler parameters of the HI imply T&lt;~5x10^4^K on average, consistent with the gas being photoionized. The MgII column densities span &gt;2 orders of magnitude at any given N_HI_, indicating a wide range of metallicities (from solar to &lt;1/100 solar). In the range of 16.2&lt;~logN_HI_&lt;~17, there is a gap in the N_MgII_ distribution corresponding to gas with ~10% solar metallicity, consistent with the gap seen in the previously identified bimodal metallicity distribution in this column density regime. Less than 3% of the absorbers in our sample show no detectable metal absorption, implying that truly pristine gas at z&lt;~1 is uncommon. We find &lt;[FeII/MgII]&gt;=-0.4+/-0.3, and since {alpha}-enhancement can affect this ratio, dust depletion is extremely mild.</description><source format="bibcode">2018ApJ...866...33L</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/866/33</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/B/hst">B/hst : HST Archived Exposures Catalog (STScI, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/VIII/76">VIII/76 : Leiden/Argentine/Bonn (LAB) Survey of Galactic HI (Kalberla+ 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/108/287">J/A+AS/108/287 : Atomic data (Verner+, 1994)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/136/463">J/ApJS/136/463 : Distances and metallicities of HVCs and IVCs (Wakker, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/651/61">J/ApJ/651/61 : Optically thick absorbers near luminous QSOs (Hennawi+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/676/262">J/ApJ/676/262 : PKS1302-102 intergalactic absorption system (Cooksey+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/700/1299">J/ApJ/700/1299 : Gas-phase element depletions in the ISM (Jenkins, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/193/28">J/ApJS/193/28 : Galaxy survey around 20 UV-bright quasars (Prochaska+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/740/91">J/ApJ/740/91 : Ly{alpha} &amp; OVI in galaxies around quasars (Prochaska+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/755/89">J/ApJ/755/89 : Metallicities of damped Ly{alpha} systems (Rafelski+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/770/138">J/ApJ/770/138 : Metallicities of Lyman limit systems and DLA (Lehner+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/776/136">J/ApJ/776/136 : QPQ VI.
