(2012, J/AJ/144/192) for the Orion A molecular cloud, only 44 out of 1208 sources found projected onto low extinction (A_K_&lt;0.8mag) gas are identified as protostars. These objects are puzzling because protostars are not typically expected to be associated with extended low extinction material. Here, we use high resolution extinction maps generated from Herschel data, optical/infrared and Spitzer Space Telescope photometry and spectroscopy of the low extinction protostellar candidate sources to determine if they are likely true protostellar sources or contaminants. Out of 44 candidate objects, we determine that 10 sources are likely protostars, with the rest being more evolved YSOs (18), galaxies (4), false detections of nebulosity and cloud edges (9), or real sources for which more data are required to ascertain their nature (3). We find none of the confirmed protostars to be associated with recognizable dense cores and we briefly discuss possible origins for these orphaned objects.</description><source format="bibcode">2016ApJ...825...91L</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/825/91</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/V/139">V/139 : The SDSS Photometric Catalog, Release 9 (Adelman-McCarthy+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/319">II/319 : UKIDSS-DR9 LAS, GCS and DXS Surveys (Lawrence+ 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/224/5">J/ApJS/224/5 : Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS): SEDs (Furlan+, 2016)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/589/A80">J/A+A/589/A80 : APOGEE strings (Hacar+, 2016)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/566/A45">J/A+A/566/A45 : Orion optical-depth and column-density maps (Lombardi+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/786/29">J/ApJ/786/29 : Catalog of distances to molecular clouds (Schlafly+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/207/5">J/ApJS/207/5 : YSOs in LDN 1641 with Hectochelle spectra (Fang+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/144/192">J/AJ/144/192 : Spitzer survey of Orion A &amp; B.
