Their archetype, {delta} Cephei, is an important calibrator for this relation. In this paper, we show that {delta}Cephei is a spectroscopic binary based on newly obtained high-precision radial velocities. We combine these new data with literature data to determine the orbit, which has period 2201 days, semi-amplitude 1.5km/s, and high eccentricity (e=0.647). We re-analyze Hipparcos intermediate astrometric data to measure {delta} Cephei's parallax (varpri=4.09+/-0.16mas) and find tentative evidence for an orbital signature, although we cannot claim detection. We estimate that Gaia will fully determine the astrometric orbit. Using the available information from spectroscopy, velocimetry, astrometry, and Geneva stellar evolution models (M_{delta}Cep_~5.0-5.25M_{sun}_), we constrain the companion mass to within 0.2M_{sun}_&lt;M_2_&lt;1.2. We discuss the potential of ongoing and previous interactions between the companion and {delta} Cephei near pericenter passage, informing reported observations of circumstellar material and bow shock. The orbit may have undergone significant changes due to a Kozai-Lidov mechanism driven by the outer (visual and astrometric) companion HD213307. Our discovery of {delta} Cephei's nature as a spectroscopic binary exposes a hidden companion and reveals a rich and dynamical history of the archetype of classical Cepheid variables.</description><source format="bibcode">2015ApJ...804..144A</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/804/144</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/III/254">III/254 : 2nd Cat. of RVs with Astrometric Data (Kharchenko+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/III/252">III/252 : Pulkovo radial velocities for 35493 HIP stars (Gontcharov, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/III/192">III/192 : Radial Velocities measured at PPO by FEHRENBACH (Fehrenbach+ 1996)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/150/13">J/AJ/150/13 : Cepheid Radial Velocities (CRaV) project (Evans+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AN/336/70">J/AN/336/70 : Vel &amp; proper motions of Galactic Cepheids (Mel'nik+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/566/L10">J/A+A/566/L10 : Cepheid RV amplitude modulations (Anderson, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/561/A126">J/A+A/561/A126 : RV and vsini of southern stars (de Medeiros+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/434/2238">J/MNRAS/434/2238 : Cepheids in open clusters (Anderson+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/434/870">J/MNRAS/434/870 : Radial velocity curves of 3 Cepheids (Szabados+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/553/A24">J/A+A/553/A24 : Models for rotating stars (Georgy+, 2013)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/537/A146">J/A+A/537/A146 : Stellar models with rotation. 0.8&lt;M&lt;120 (Ekstrom+, 2012)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/525/A95">J/A+A/525/A95 : Search for brown-dwarf companions of stars (Sahlmann+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/142/136">J/AJ/142/136 : Spectroscopy of Cepheids. l=30-250{deg} (Luck+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/504/959">J/A+A/504/959 : Amplitudes of single-mode Cepheids (Klagyivik+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AN/328/889">J/AN/328/889 : Mean Radial Velocities of open clusters (Kharchenko+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/453/155">J/A+A/453/155 : Extended envelopes around Gal.
