The ultimate goal is a determination of the Hubble constant to an accuracy of 2%. This paper is the first in a series on the Cepheid population of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and focusses on the period-luminosity (PL) relations (Leavitt laws) that will be used, in conjunction with observations of Milky Way Cepheids, to set the slope and zero point of the Cepheid distance scale in the mid-infrared. To this end, we have obtained uniformly sampled light curves for 85 LMC Cepheids, having periods between 6 and 140 days. PL and period-color relations are presented in the 3.6um and 4.5um bands. We demonstrate that the 3.6um band is a superb distance indicator. The cyclical variation of the [3.6]-[4.5] color has been measured for the first time. We attribute the amplitude and phase of the color curves to the dissociation and recombination of CO molecules in the Cepheid's atmosphere. The CO affects only the 4.5um flux making it a potential metallicity indicator.</description><source format="bibcode">2011ApJ...743...76S</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/743/76</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/730/119">J/ApJ/730/119 : HST observations of Cepheids in SN Ia hosts (Riess+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/397/933">J/MNRAS/397/933 : LMC type II Cepheids JHKs magnitudes (Matsunaga+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AcA/58/163">J/AcA/58/163 : VI light curves of LMC classical Cepheids (Soszynski+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/679/71">J/ApJ/679/71 : Mid-IR period-luminosity relations (Freedman+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/415/521">J/A+A/415/521 : BVRIJK and velocities for MC Cepheids (Storm+, 2004)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/128/2239">J/AJ/128/2239 : JHKs photometry of 92 LMC Cepheids (Persson+, 2004)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/142/71">J/ApJS/142/71 : BVRI observations of LMC Cepheids (Sebo+, 2002)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AcA/49/223">J/AcA/49/223 : BVI photometry of OGLE LMC Cepheids (Udalski+, 1999)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/743/76</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/743/76</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/743/76</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/743/76</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/743/76</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/743/76</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJ/743/76/table1 (Magnitudes for LMC Cepheids)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/743/76/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/743/76/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/743/76/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>73.7762083</ra><dec>-67.4758333</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/8275 8280 6/33051 33052 33053 33054 33073 33075 33076 33077 33078 33084 33088 33091 33092 33094 33095 33098 33099 33106 33107 33108 33110 33112 33113 33124 33126 33127 33144</spatial><spectral>3.9193497546148093e-20 6.185923063528282e-20</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJ/743/76?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/743/76/table1</name><description>Magnitudes for LMC Cepheids</description><column><name>SimbadName</name><description>Simbad column added by the CDS</description><ucd>meta.id</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="13*">char</dataType></column><column><name>LC</name><description>light curves</description><ucd>meta.ref.url</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
