We compare the relative strengths of PAH emission features with Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical diagnostics to probe the relationship between PAH grain properties and star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) activity. Short-to-long wavelength PAH ratios, and in particular the 7.7um-to-11.3um feature ratio, are strongly correlated with the star formation diagnostics D_n_(4000) and H{alpha} equivalent width, increasing with younger stellar populations. This ratio also shows a significant difference between active and non-active galaxies, with the active galaxies exhibiting weaker 7.7um emission. A hard radiation field as measured by [OIII]/H{beta} and [NeIII]_15.6um_/[NeII]_12.8um_ effects PAH ratios differently depending on whether this field results from starburst activity or an AGN. Our results are consistent with a picture in which larger PAH molecules grow more efficiently in richer media and in which smaller PAH molecules are preferentially destroyed by the AGN.</description><source format="bibcode">2009ApJ...705..885O</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/705/885</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/741/79">J/ApJ/741/79 : The Spitzer-SDSS-GALEX Spectroscopic Survey (O'Dowd+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/527/A109">J/A+A/527/A109 : Dust and PAH emission SEDs of disk galaxies (Popescu+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/514/A5">J/A+A/514/A5 : PAH luminous galaxies at z~1 (Takagi+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/507/713">J/A+A/507/713 : Galaxies with strong PAH emission (Haas+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/686/127">J/ApJ/686/127 : Starbursts luminosities based on PAH (Weedman+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/656/770">J/ApJ/656/770 : Mid-IR spectrum of star-forming galaxies (Smith+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/319/318">J/A+A/319/318 : PAH hypothesis (Pauzat+ 1997)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/705/885</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/705/885</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/705/885</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/705/885</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/705/885</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/705/885</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJ/705/885/table1 (Dust features, extinction, and line strengths from PAHFIT analysis)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/705/885/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/705/885/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/705/885/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>160.34397889</ra><dec>58.89201</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/1519 6/6046 6047 6069 6070 6071 6073 6075 6112 6114 6120</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJ/705/885?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/705/885/table1</name><description>Dust features, extinction, and line strengths from PAHFIT analysis</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
