We establish as a general property of ULXs that the most X-ray-luminous objects possess the flattest X-ray spectra (in the Chandra bandpass). No prior sample studies have established the general hardening of ULX spectra with luminosity. This hardening occurs at the highest luminosities (absorbed luminosity &gt;=5x10^39^erg/s) and is in line with recent models arguing that ULXs are actually stellar mass black holes. From spectral modeling, we show that the evidence originally taken to mean that ULXs are IMBHs - i.e., the "simple IMBH model" - is nowhere near as compelling when a large sample of ULXs is looked at properly. During the last couple of years, XMM-Newton spectroscopy of ULXs has to a large extent begun to negate the simple IMBH model based on fewer objects. We confirm and expand these results, which validates the XMM-Newton work in a broader sense with independent X-ray data.</description><source format="bibcode">2008ApJ...687..471B</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/687/471</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/B/chandra">B/chandra : The Chandra Archive Log (CXC, 1999-)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/VII/145">VII/145 : Nearby Galaxies Catalogue (NBG) (Tully 1988)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/664/458">J/ApJ/664/458 : Spectral fit of ULX sources (Devi+, 2007)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/649/730">J/ApJ/649/730 : ULX population in nearby galaxies from XMM (Winter+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/429/1125">J/A+A/429/1125 : Catalog of Ultraluminous X-ray sources (Liu+, 2005)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/154/519">J/ApJS/154/519 : Properties of ultraluminous X-ray candidates (Swartz+, 2004)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/344/134">J/MNRAS/344/134 : Chandra ultraluminous X-ray sources (Humphrey+, 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/143/25">J/ApJS/143/25 : Intermediate-luminosity X-ray objects catalog (Colbert+,</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/687/471</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/687/471</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/687/471</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/687/471</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/687/471</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/687/471</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJ/687/471/table2 (Properties of sample objects)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/687/471/table2?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/687/471/table2?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/687/471/table2?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>21.146667</ra><dec>3.791944</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/2155 2409 2709 3506 5995 6034 6040 7225 7606 7743 8225 10761 10841 10856 10905 10911 11127 11263 11434 15593 16655 17754 18212 25344 27765 27914 28141 28184 28496 33193 35512 41586 43233 43262 43881 46491</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJ/687/471?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>X-ray</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/687/471/table2</name><description>Properties of sample objects</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
