Using FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 2.1m and 4m telescopes, we have obtained spectra of ~70 new members of the cluster and classified them via the prominent J- and H-band water absorption features. Derived spectral types range from ~M1 to later than M8 with typical classification errors of 0.5-1 subclasses. By combining these spectral types with JHK photometry, we place these objects on the H-R diagram and use pre-main-sequence evolutionary models to infer masses and ages. The mean age for this low-mass population of NGC 2024 is 0.5Myr, and derived masses range from ~0.7 to 0.02M_{sun}_ with 23 objects falling below the hydrogen-burning limit. The logarithmic mass function rises to a peak at ~0.2M_{sun}_ before turning over and declining into the substellar regime. There is a possible secondary peak at ~0.035M_{sun}_ ; however, the errors are also consistent with a flat IMF in this region. The ratio of brown dwarfs to stars is similar to that found in the Trapezium but roughly twice the ratio found in IC 348, leading us to conclude that the substellar IMF in young clusters may be dependent on the local star-forming environment.</description><source format="bibcode">2006ApJ...646.1215L</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/646/1215</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/598/375">J/ApJ/598/375 : Chandra X-ray observations of NGC 2024 (Skinner+, 2003)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/646/1215</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/646/1215</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/646/1215</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/646/1215</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/646/1215</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/646/1215</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/ApJ/646/1215/table3 (Measured data and derived quantities for classified sources in NGC 2024)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/646/1215/table3?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/646/1215/table3?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/ApJ/646/1215/table3?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>85.4075</ra><dec>-1.886444</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/22855</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/ApJ/646/1215?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/ApJ/646/1215/table3</name><description>Measured data and derived quantities for classified sources in NGC 2024</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
