We use very deep near-infrared images of the Hubble Deep Field-South in the J_s_, H, and K_s_ bands, taken as part of FIRES at the VLT, to follow the evolution of the optical rest-frame sizes of galaxies. For a total of 168 galaxies with K_s,AB_ <=23.5, we find that the rest-frame V-band sizes r_e,V_ of luminous galaxies (<L_V_>~2x10^10^h^-2^L_{sun}_) at 2<z<3 are 3 times smaller than for equally luminous galaxies today. In contrast, the mass-size relation has evolved relatively little: the size at mass <M_*_>~2x10^10^h^-2^M_{sun}_ has changed by 20% (+/-20%) since z~2.5. Both results can be reconciled by the fact that the stellar M/L ratio is lower in the luminous high-z galaxies than in nearby ones because they have young stellar populations. The lower incidence of large galaxies at z~3 seems to reflect the rarity of galaxies with high stellar mass.
2004ApJ...604..521T<referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/ApJ/604/521</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource>http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~fires : FIRES data</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/145/111">J/A+AS/145/111 : HDF-South catalogue of galaxies (Volonteri+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/122/2205">J/AJ/122/2205 : HDF-South K photometric redshift catalog (Rudnick+, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/125/1107">J/AJ/125/1107 : Ultra-deep near-IR observation in HDF-S (Labbe+, 2003)</relatedResource></relationship>
<rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/604/521</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/604/521</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/ApJ/604/521</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/604/521</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/604/521</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/ApJ/604/521</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema>

Properties of the sample galaxies
<column>

Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
