We use high-resolution (R{approx}100000), 3.2{mu}m spectra taken with CRIRES/VLT to trace the radial-velocity shift of the water features in the planet's day side atmosphere during 4 hr of its 4.23 day orbit after superior conjunction. We detect the signature of molecular absorption by water at a significance of 5.6{sigma} at a systemic velocity of V_sys_=-33+/-2km/s, coincident with the 51 Peg host star, with a corresponding orbital velocity K_P_=133_-3.5_^+4.3^km/s. This translates directly to a planet mass of M_p_=0.476_-0.031_^+0.032^M_J_, placing it at the transition boundary between Jovian and Neptunian worlds. We determine upper and lower limits on the orbital inclination of the system of 70{deg}&lt;i&lt;82.2{deg}. We also provide an updated orbital solution for 51 Peg b, using an extensive set of 639 stellar radial velocities measured between 1994 and 2013, finding no significant evidence of an eccentric orbit. We find no evidence of significant absorption or emission from other major carbon-bearing molecules of the planet, including methane and carbon dioxide. The atmosphere is non-inverted in the temperature-pressure region probed by these observations. The deepest absorption lines reach an observed relative contrast of 0.9*10^-3^ with respect to the host star continuum flux at an angular separation of 3 milliarcseconds. This work is consistent with a previous tentative report of K-band molecular absorption for 51 Peg b by Brogi et al.</description><source format="bibcode">2017AJ....153..138B</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/AJ/153/138</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/576/A134">J/A+A/576/A134 : Radial velocities of 51 Peg (Martins+, 2015)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/210/5">J/ApJS/210/5 : The twenty-five year Lick planet search (Fischer+, 2014)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/646/505">J/ApJ/646/505 : Catalog of nearby exoplanets (Butler+, 2006)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/414/351">J/A+A/414/351 : ELODIE survey for northern extrasolar planets (Naef+, 2004)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/153/138</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/153/138</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/153/138</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/153/138</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/153/138</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/153/138</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/AJ/153/138/table1</name><description>Stellar radial velocity measurements of 51 Peg from multiple observatories</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
