We have used modern digital processing techniques to examine Harvard objective-prism spectra made from 1892 to 1941. Relatively high excitation HeI{lambda}4471 and [FeIII]4658 emission, conspicuous today, were weak and perhaps absent throughout those years. Feast et al. (2001MNRAS.322..741F) noted this qualitative fact for other pre-1920 spectra, but we quantify it and extend it to a time only three years before Gaviola (1953ApJ...118..234G)'s first observations of the high-excitation features. Evidently the supply of helium-ionizing photons ({lambda}&lt;504{AA}) grew rapidly between 1941 and 1944. The apparent scarcity of such far-UV radiation before 1944 is difficult to explain in models that employ a hot massive secondary star, because no feasible dense wind or obscuration by dust would have hidden the photoionization caused by the proposed companion during most of its orbital period. We also discuss the qualitative near-constancy of the spectrum from 1900 to 1940, and {eta} Car's photometric and spectroscopic transition between 1940 and 1953.</description><source format="bibcode">2008AJ....135.1249H</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/AJ/135/1249</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/181/473">J/ApJS/181/473 : Analysis of the spectrum of eta Car (Nielsen+, 2009)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/135/1249">J/AJ/135/1249 : The early spectra of eta Carinae (Humphreys+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/419/215">J/A+A/419/215 : Emission lines of eta Car (Hartman+, 2004)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+AS/133/299">J/A+AS/133/299 : Long-term spectroscopy of eta Carinae (Damineli+ 1998)</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://archive.stsci.edu/prepds/etacar/ : HST treasury program on eta Car</relatedResource><relatedResource>http://etacar.umn.edu/ : eta car research group site</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/135/1249</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/135/1249</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/135/1249</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/135/1249</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/135/1249</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/135/1249</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability><description>Associated data</description><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/assocdata/?obs_collection=J/AJ/135/1249</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/AJ/135/1249/tablea1</name><description>The Harvard objective prism plates of Eta Car</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
