Fifteen new ultracool binary candidates are reported here. Eleven known binaries are confirmed, and orbital motion is detected in some of them. We estimate that the closest binary systems in this sample have periods between 5 and 20yr, and thus dynamical masses will be derived in the near future. For the calculation of binary frequency, we restrict ourselves to systems with distances less than 20pc. After correction of the binaries bias, we find a ratio of visual binaries (at the HST limit of detection) of around 10%, and that 15% of the 26 objects within 20pc are binary systems with separations between 1 and 8AU. The observed frequency of ultracool binaries is similar to that of binaries with G-type primaries in the separation range from 2.1 to 140AU. There is also a clear deficit of ultracool binaries with separations greater than 15AU, and a possible tendency for the binaries to have mass ratios near unity. Most systems have indeed visual and near-infrared brightness ratios between 1 and 0.3. We discuss our results in the framework of current scenarios for the formation and evolution of free-floating brown dwarfs.</description><source format="bibcode">2003AJ....126.1526B</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/AJ/126/1526</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/B/denis">B/denis : The DENIS database (DENIS Consortium, 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/II/246">II/246 : 2MASS All-Sky Catalog of Point Sources (Cutri+ 2003)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/123/3409">J/AJ/123/3409 : SDSS M, L, and T dwarfs (Hawley+, 2002)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/126/1526</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/126/1526</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/126/1526</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/126/1526</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/126/1526</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/126/1526</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/AJ/126/1526/table1 (List of Targets)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/126/1526/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/126/1526/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/126/1526/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>31.370833</ra><dec>-11.990278</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/360 439 464 483 496 734 749 4253 4515 4539 4719 4775 4875 5002 5077 5413 5481 5659 6223 6255 6298 6597 6625 7533 7668 8402 8522 8625 8735 8761 8781 8794 8805 8864 8995 9124 9293 9387 9569 9628 9643 10110 10243 10332 10555 10657 10665 11164 11273 11587 11596 11600 11661 11856 12152 12211 12519 12537 12541 12570 12600 13336 13341 13455 14850 16867 16873 18087 18590 18711 18726 18789 19680 19755 19857 20024 20141 20435 21835 22861 22956 23193 23234 24632 24875 25015 25132 25266 25416 25893 25934-25935 25946 26020 26761 27046 27618 27635 28055 28277 28316 28427 28450 31324 31336 31396 32284 32372 32426 32456-32457 33585 33689 33757 33930 34400 36237 36253 36602 38322 38837 40375 40901 44008 44807 44929 44954 46192 46671 47708 48462 48593 48750</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/AJ/126/1526?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/AJ/126/1526/table1</name><description>List of Targets</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
