In the HDF-S proper we observed approximately half the galaxies brighter than I_814_(AB)=24 and obtained redshifts for 76% of them. Targets in our HDF-S sample were preselected to be at z&lt;1 based on photometric redshifts, while in the FFs a simple magnitude cut was used. The photometric redshift preselection in the HDF-S resulted in a spectroscopic success rate that is significantly higher than in the FFs, where no preselection was applied. The rms precision of our redshift measurements, determined from repeat observations, is {delta}z=0.0003. We present the photometry and redshifts for the 97 objects for which we secured spectroscopic redshifts and describe the basic properties of this sample. The photometry was derived from the HST observations; the spectroscopy was obtained at the VLT using the FORS2 spectrograph on the Kueyen (UT2) and Yepun (UT4) 8.2m telescopes. (*) Actually, 103 redshifts in table1.</description><source format="bibcode">2003AJ....126.1208S</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/AJ/126/1208</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/119/486">J/AJ/119/486 : HDF-S: STIS imaging (Gardner+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/120/2747">J/AJ/120/2747 : HDF-South WFPC2 observations (Casertano+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/538/493">J/ApJ/538/493 : HDF-South NICMOS field (Yahata+, 2000)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/122/2190">J/AJ/122/2190 : HDF-South multicolor observations (Vanzella+, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/122/2205">J/AJ/122/2205 : HDF-South K photometric redshift catalog (Rudnick+, 2001)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/548/127">J/ApJ/548/127 : Hubble Deep Field-South region (Teplitz+ 2001)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/126/1208</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/126/1208</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/126/1208</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/126/1208</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/126/1208</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/126/1208</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/AJ/126/1208/table1 (HDFS objects with spectroscopic redshifts)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/126/1208/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/126/1208/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/126/1208/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>338.32790833</ra><dec>-60.57698889</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/45526</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/AJ/126/1208?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/AJ/126/1208/table1</name><description>HDFS objects with spectroscopic redshifts</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
