The survey, designed to find without color bias faint companions, consists of optical coronagraphic images of the 1 field of view centered on each star and infrared direct images with a 32" field of view. The images were obtained through the optical Gunn r and z filters and the infrared J and K filters. The survey achieves sensitivities up to 4 absolute magnitudes fainter than the prototype brown dwarf, Gliese 229B. However, this sensitivity varies with the seeing conditions, the intrinsic brightness of the star observed, and the angular distance from the star. As a result, we tabulate sensitivity limits for each star in the survey. We used the criterion of common proper motion to distinguish companions and to determine their luminosities. In addition to the brown dwarf Gl 229B, we have identified six new stellar companions of the sample stars. Since the survey began, accurate trigonometric parallax measurements for most of the stars have become available. As a result, some of the stars we originally included should no longer be included in the 8pc sample. In addition, the 8pc sample is incomplete at the faint end of the main sequence, complicating our calculation of the binary fraction of brown dwarfs. We assess the sensitivity of the survey to stellar companions and to brown dwarf companions of different masses and ages.</description><source format="bibcode">2001AJ....121.2189O</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/AJ/121/2189</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/III/198">III/198 : Palomar/MSU nearby star spectroscopic survey (Hawley+ 1997)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/I/238">I/238 : Yale Trigonometric Parallaxes, Fourth Edition (van Altena+ 1995)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/V/70">V/70 : Nearby Stars, Preliminary 3rd Version (Gliese+ 1991)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/121/2189</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/121/2189</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/AJ/121/2189</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/121/2189</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/121/2189</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/AJ/121/2189</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/AJ/121/2189/table1 (The 8 pc Sample)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/121/2189/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/121/2189/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/AJ/121/2189/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>269.4520833</ra><dec>4.6933889</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/131 137 546 684 811 2737 2923 3020 3345 4158 4444 4693 5000 5420 5534 5853 6672 6726 7103 7264 8023 8790 9629 9696 10149 10303 11636 11645 12679 13301 13688 13743 14266 14278 14772 14906 15311 15602 15960 16041 16069 16502 16758 16827 17348 17425 18139 18440 18450 18496 18761 19466 20071 20100 20896 20940 21136 21479 22014 22148 22289 22300 22309 22325 22645 22708 22807 23564 23591 23735 23910 26560 26583 26699 26972 27201 27392 27459 27462 27731 27756 27762 28018 28343 28816 28955 29196 29458 29684 30505 30543 30771 30833 31087 31751 31781 32470 36526 36674 36697 40505 42459 44181 44257 44284 44921 44937 46925 46939 48906</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/AJ/121/2189?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/AJ/121/2189/table1</name><description>The 8 pc Sample</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
