Their study gives clues to the formation and evolution of the clusters in which they are embedded. We analyse here in a homogeneous way the properties of a sample of more than 1000 BCGs in the redshift range 0.15&lt;z&lt;0.7, based on images from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. Based on a recent catalogue of 1371 clusters, we applied our automatic BCG detection algorithm and successfully identified 70% of the BCGs in our sample. We analysed their 2D photometric properties with GALFIT. We also compared the position angles of the BCG major axes with those of the overall cluster to which they belong. We find no evolution of the BCG properties with redshift up to z=0.7, in agreement with previous results by Chu et al. (2021A&amp;A...649A..42C, Cat. J/A+A/649/A42), who analysed a sample an order of magnitude smaller, but reaching a redshift z=1.8. The Kormendy relation for BCGs is tight and consistent with that of normal elliptical galaxies and BCGs measured by other authors. The position angles of the BCGs and of the cluster to which they belong agree within 30 degrees for 55% of the objects with well-defined position angles. The study of this very large sample of more than 1000 BCGs shows that they were mainly formed before z=0.7 as we find no significant growth for the luminosities and sizes of central galaxies. We discuss the importance of the intracluster light in the interpretation of these results. We highlight the role of image depth in the modelling of the luminosity profiles of BCGs, and give evidence of the presence of an inner structure which can only be resolved on deep surveys with limiting apparent magnitude at 80% completeness m_80_&gt;26mag/arcsec^2^.</description><source format="bibcode">2022A&amp;A...666A..54C</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/666/A54</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/649/A42">J/A+A/649/A42 : BCG up to z=1.80 physical properties (Chu+, 2021)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/666/A54</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/666/A54</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/666/A54</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/666/A54</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/666/A54</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/666/A54</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/A+A/666/A54/table1 (Catalogue of the 1238 BCGs detected in the CFHTLS)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/666/A54/table1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/666/A54/table1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/666/A54/table1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>30.7037428</ra><dec>-9.3326314</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>4/714 1104 2298 5/2687 2851 2854 2860-2861 2945 4372-4373 4375 4420-4422 4424-4425 4758-4759 4764-4765 4767 9198 10233 10235-10238 6/10741-10743 10745 10747 11092-11093 11398-11399 11401-11403 11422 11448-11449 11452 11776-11777 11779 17497 17525 17692-17694 17705 17708-17709 17712-17714 17730 19025-19028 19030-19031 19047 19053 19064-19065 19067 19156 21840-21841 21844 36599 36606-36607 36750 36798 40911 40920 40922-40923 40929 40931 40956-40958</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/666/A54?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/666/A54/table1</name><description>Catalogue of the 1238 BCGs detected in the CFHTLS</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
