Their orbits can also precess as a result of planet-star interactions. Calculations show that both effects might be detected for the very-hot exoplanet WASP-12 b using the method of precise transit-timing over a time span of about 10yr. We acquired new precise light curves for 29 transits of WASP-12 b, spanning four observing seasons from November 2012 to February 2016. New mid-transit times, together with those from the literature, were used to refine the transit ephemeris and analyze the timing residuals. We find that the transit times of WASP-12 b do not follow a linear ephemeris with a 5-{sigma} confidence level. They may be approximated with a quadratic ephemeris that gives a change rate in the orbital period of (-2.56+/-0.40)x10^-2^s/yr. The tidal quality parameter of the host star was found to be equal to 2.5x10^5^, which is similar to theoretical predictions for Sun-like stars. We also considered a model in which the observed timing residuals are interpreted as a result of the apsidal precession. We find, however, that this model is statistically less probable than the orbital decay.</description><source format="bibcode">2016A&amp;A...588L...6M</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/588/L6</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/720/872">J/ApJ/720/872 : A spectropolarimetric analysis of WASP-12 (Fossati+, 2010)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/528/A65">J/A+A/528/A65 : WASP-12b transits (Maciejewski+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/551/A108">J/A+A/551/A108 : Multi-site obs. of WASP-12 b transit (Maciejewski+, 2013)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/588/L6</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/588/L6</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/588/L6</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/588/L6</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/588/L6</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/588/L6</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><coverage><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc"/></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/588/L6/w12rer</name><description>Re-reduced light curves from literature</description><column><name>Filt</name><description>[RV- ] Filter name</description><ucd>meta.id;instr.filter</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="1*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
