We intend to extend the current known sample to the unexplored low end of the brightness distribution of these stars, building a more representative dataset with which to extrapolate their behaviour to other Galactic and extra-galactic environments. We select candidates using only near infrared photometry, and with medium resolution multi-object spectroscopy, we perform spectral classification and derive their line-of-sight velocities, confirming the nature of the candidates and their membership to the clouds. Around two hundred new RSGs have been detected, hinting at a yet to be observed large population. Using near and mid infrared photometry we study the brightness distribution of these stars, the onset of mass-loss and the effect of dust in their atmospheres. Based on this sample, new a priori classification criteria are investigated, combining mid and near infrared photometry to improve the observational efficiency of similar programs as this.</description><source format="bibcode">2015A&amp;A...578A...3G</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/578/A3</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/AJ/126/2867">J/AJ/126/2867 : Red supergiants in Magellanic Clouds (Massey+, 2003)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/578/A3</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/578/A3</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/578/A3</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/578/A3</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/578/A3</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/578/A3</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/A+A/578/A3/tablea1 (Catalogue of the observed sources)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/578/A3/tablea1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/578/A3/tablea1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/578/A3/tablea1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>80.21066667</ra><dec>-69.40222222</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>5/8274 8323 8329 6/33090-33091 33094-33095 33100-33101 33304 33306 33313 33328</spatial><spectral>8.157980699529898e-21 1.7003137259100215e-19</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/578/A3?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband><waveband>Optical</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/578/A3/tablea1</name><description>Catalogue of the observed sources</description><column><name>SimbadName</name><description>Simbad column added by the CDS</description><ucd>meta.id</ucd><dataType xsi:type="vs:VOTableType" arraysize="25*">char</dataType></column><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
