The very deep photometry, down to J~23.5, and the wide area covered allow us to trace the red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that belong to the outer disk and the halo of NGC 253, out to 50kpc along the galaxy minor axis. We confirm the existence of an extraplanar component, with a prominent southern shelf and detect for the first time a symmetrical feature on the north side. The star counts profile along the major axis show a clear break at 25kpc from the center, signalling the transition from the disk to the halo. The isodensity contours show a flat inner halo that blends with a more extended, diffuse, rounder outer halo. In such external structure, we detect an overdensity at about 28kpc from the plane and extending over 20kpc parallel with the disk of the galaxy. The spatially resolved color magnitude diagrams show a rather homogeneous stellar population across the tile. Particularly surprising is the presence of bright, intermediate age, AGB stars found scattered over a large volume.</description><source format="bibcode">2014A&amp;A...562A..73G</source><referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/562/A73</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/MNRAS/388/849">J/MNRAS/388/849 : NGC253 XMM observations (Barnard+, 2008)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJ/736/24">J/ApJ/736/24 : VI photometry of sources in NGC253 halo (Bailin+, 2011)</relatedResource><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/A+A/550/A12">J/A+A/550/A12 : NGC253 near-infrared H_2_ emission (Rosenberg+, 2013)</relatedResource></relationship></content><rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/562/A73</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/562/A73</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/562/A73</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/562/A73</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/562/A73</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/562/A73</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch"><description>Cone search capability for table J/A+A/562/A73/catalogb (Positions, magnitudes, photometric errors, types for each source)</description><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/562/A73/catalogb?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/562/A73/catalogb?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/562/A73/catalogb?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>11.35709167</ra><dec>-25.69284444</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/16653 16655 16664 16666 16677</spatial><spectral>1.398457827073138e-19 1.7798557115773645e-19</spectral><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/562/A73?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema><name>default</name><table><name>J/A+A/562/A73/catalogb</name><description>Positions, magnitudes, photometric errors, types for each source</description><column><name>recno</name><description>Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
