We confirm previous studies, but for a larger sample, that a large fraction of galaxies have significant lopsidedness in their stellar disks, measured as the Fourier amplitude of the m=1 component normalised to the average or m=0 component in the surface density. Late-type galaxies are found to be more lopsided, while the presence of m=2 spiral arms and bars is correlated with disk lopsidedness. We also show that the m=1 amplitude is uncorrelated with the presence of companions. Numerical simulations were carried out to study the generation of m=1 via different processes: galaxy tidal encounters, galaxy mergers, and external gas accretion with subsequent star formation. These simulations show that galaxy interactions and mergers can trigger strong lopsidedness, but do not explain several independent statistical properties of observed galaxies. To explain all the observational results, it is required that a large fraction of lopsidedness results from cosmological accretion of gas on galactic disks, which can create strongly lopsided disks when this accretion is asymmetrical enough.
2005A&A...438..507B<referenceURL>https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/438/507</referenceURL><type>Catalog</type><contentLevel>Research</contentLevel><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/TAP">TAP VizieR generic service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>IsServedBy</relationshipType><relatedResource>Conesearch service</relatedResource></relationship><relationship><relationshipType>related-to</relationshipType><relatedResource ivo-id="ivo://CDS.VizieR/J/ApJS/143/73">J/ApJS/143/73 : OSUBGS, Morphology of spiral galaxies (Eskridge+, 2002)</relatedResource></relationship>
<rights>https://cds.unistra.fr/vizier-org/licences_vizier.html</rights><capability><interface xsi:type="vr:WebBrowser"><accessURL use="full">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/438/507</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/438/507</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/VizieR-2?-source=J/A+A/438/507</mirrorURL></interface></capability><capability><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/438/507</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/438/507</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/votable?-source=J/A+A/438/507</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface></capability><capability standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/TAP#aux"><interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://tapvizier.cds.unistra.fr/TAPVizieR/tap</accessURL></interface></capability><capability xsi:type="cs:ConeSearch" standardID="ivo://ivoa.net/std/ConeSearch">
Cone search capability for table J/A+A/438/507/tablea1 (Inclination and values of <A1> and <A> for galaxies in our sample)
<interface xsi:type="vs:ParamHTTP" role="std"><accessURL use="base">https://vizier.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/438/507/tablea1?</accessURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at IUCAA: Pune, India">https://vizier.iucaa.in/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/438/507/tablea1?</mirrorURL><mirrorURL title="VizieR at SAAO: SAAO, South Africa">http://vizieridia.saao.ac.za/viz-bin/conesearch/J/A+A/438/507/tablea1?</mirrorURL><queryType>GET</queryType><resultType>text/xml+votable</resultType></interface><maxSR>180.0</maxSR><maxRecords>50000</maxRecords><verbosity>true</verbosity><testQuery><ra>352.18</ra><dec>-41.3325</dec><sr>0.005555555555555556</sr></testQuery></capability><coverage><spatial>6/2372 2383 2687 4149 4439 5200 5492 5545 5572 5581 5587 5589 5596 5610 5634 8196 8256 8320 8506 10637 10727 10817 10900 10905 10912 10924-10925 10927 10935 10990 11392 13489 16479 16871 17245 17281 17286 17698 17747 17780 17905 18011 18214 18689 19697 20000 20270 20526 20720 20739 20896 21065 21198 22751 24735 24949 25044 25046 25135 25205 25344 25438-25439 25599 25742 25762 25772 25790 25890 25946 25997 26128 26148 26175 26303 26307 26309 26316 26336 26338 26343 26365 26472 27255 27426 27458 27603 27653 27757 27767 27828 27860-27861 27914 27917-27918 27942 27955 28039 28045-28046 28172 28191 28208 28234 28267 28304 28495 28498 28521 28529 28612 33176 33228 33835 33935 34272-34273 34334 34495 34542 34910 35243 35691 35746 35827 35966 36081 36131 36134 36261 36287 36338 36450 36716 36773 36785 36789 36990 37429 38139 38671 38701 40472 43326 43621 43787 43827 43978 44006 44718 45497 45558 45803 46399 46438 46460 46479 46525 46615 47178 47456 48462 48665</spatial><footprint ivo-id="ivo://ivoa.net/std/moc">https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/moc/J/A+A/438/507?format=ascii</footprint><waveband>Optical</waveband><waveband>Infrared</waveband></coverage><tableset><schema>

Inclination and values of <A1> and <A> for galaxies in our sample
<column>

Record number assigned by the VizieR team.
